Agatized Coral Fossil is Florida's state stone. These specimens are found in ancient ocean beds, where silica rich groundwater has percolated through them and over time has replaced its calcium carbonate skeleton with a hard variety of Chalcedony. This leaves the ornamental fossil with a sometimes banded, stone look. The coral is from the Oligocene-Miocene period (about 38 - 25 million years ago). These fossils are found in a variety of colors - white, gray, brown, black, yellow, and red, depending on the trace minerals which were in the area when they transformed.
This specimen weighs 2 3/8 ounces and is 4 1/4 inches long by 2 inches wide by 1 inch thick (at its thickest point)
